Vertical Power brings the seemingly mundane component of circuit breakers into the 21st century. What has been an important but uninteresting part of the cockpit and a pilot’s regular preflight and inflight checklist has made the jump into the age of digital instruments, bringing with it new capabilities for aircraft designers and a reduced workload for pilots.

Electronic Circuit Breakers — If you’re like most pilots or even most aircraft designers, you might say, “What ... ? Why would I need electronic circuit breakers (ECBs)?” Indeed, Vertical Power says, “Our main competition is simply ‘the way it’s always been done’.” The simplest explanation is that old-style circuit breakers require the power of a given component be brought to the circuit breaker panel, where ECBs only need a signal line, a smaller, low-power wire that transmits information. This means designers and homebuilders can gain amazing flexibility in their cockpit wiring and new capabilities trail along close behind.

Do More With Less — Wiring is far simpler when using centralized control and modern technology to control electrical power to the devices and sensors on your aircraft. Switches and circuit breakers are upgraded to solid-state circuitry that is far more reliable. In addition, the VP-X systems allow you to monitor and control your entire electrical system using your EFIS display. With the VP-X, you get many new capabilities, for example, your flaps can be wired to show an alarm if you exceed flap extension speed or to send an audio alert to your headphones if an electrical failure occurs. An old-fashioned circuit breaker can fail and you may not know until you need that component.

Strong Company — Vertical Power was acquired by Astronics Ballard Technology in Everett, Washington effective at the start of 2014. A logical business decision, Ballard Technology is a leader in the development and manufacture of electronic hardware and software for aerospace, industrial, and commercial applications. Ballard began supplying avionics databus interfaces to the aerospace industry in 1986, and was one of the first to realize the potential in using standard computers as the host for specialized test equipment.
