Phoenix Air USA

Phoenix Air USA imports the beautiful Phoenix Special Light-Sport Aircraft, a performance motorglider that can cruise swiftly and serve both functions with excellent creature comfort. Given its clever wing extension design, you get two aircraft in one!

Is Phoenix an especially smooth and graceful LSA cruiser, or an efficient motorglider affording an easy ride to thermal lift and soaring play? Happily, the answer is both! The compound curves of Phoenix's wing are enough inspire the closet airplane designer in almost any pilot. The roomy cockpit will be appreciated by both occupants. The performance specs appeal to all pilots and that Phoenix performs well while also being quite fuel efficient is a bonus everyone will enjoy. So a lot to love in Phoenix, even if you aren't interested in soaring flight.

Phoenix was certified as SLSA #111 in August 2010. The Czech-built composite SLSA is imported by Jim Lee of Melbourne, Florida under the name Phoenix Air USA. Lee brings impressive soaring credentials as a past hang gliding champion and sailplane enthusiast. Take a Phoenix demo with Jim and you can observe a soaring master at work (you might learn a lot).

The comfy Phoenix cockpit invites a long flight and glass screen digital instrumentation is available or you can stick with simpler analog gauges and soaring variometer at your choice. Phoenix offers full span flaperons that function smoothly on multiple wing angles. A picture of grace with tasteful winglets, Phoenix can also swap wings. Lee reported, "It takes about a minute to remove both [span extending] wingtips, and another minute to install the short tips." With shorter span, Phoenix is easier to hangar and cruises a bit faster. Stick the longer wing extensions back in and Phoenix transforms into a 50-foot-span motorglider with an impressive 32:1 glide angle (enough to glide 16 miles from only 2,600 feet above the surface!). A center console houses the flap, airbrake, and trim controls with separate levers for the spoilers and flaps so that they can be used independently. Learn more at the company's website or see our ByDanJohnson.com content on Phoenix below.

  Phoenix Air -- Phoenix (motorglider)
If you love long, shapely wings, here's an airplane to warm your heart. But it's more than an LSA airplane... in fact, it's a motorglider and a most impressive one at that. For soaring enthusiasts Phoenix is one of the most attractive choices among all Light-Sport Aircraft. But it can cruise fast and long while providing a huge safety measure of a very long glide in the unlikely event her engine should fail. See standard multiple wings and more in our video presentation of Phoenix.

Phoenix Air -- electric ePhoenix (2013)
We know the elegant Phoenix, a sleek motorglider that also enjoys flying powered cross country flights (more on an especially long flight in another video). At Aero 2013 we had a chance to visit with Martin Stepanek about Phoenix Air's pure-electric aircraft called the ePhoenix. Martin helps us understand the details of electric power in a modern, efficient Light-Sport Aircraft.

SPLOG begins: I think Phoenix is one the loveliest aircraft in the LSA fleet. Of course, I have a rather large bias as I'm a soaring enthusiast and this is one fine soaring machine in the SLSA fleet, able to compete fairly with a pure glider. I'm also a fan of importer
